in june

The leafy shadows are thick again in the woods surrounding our meadow. The seeds we have been planting are beginning to peak their heads, to fill our table abundantly. Two hens are sitting on clutches of eggs.

I have been busy with papercutting commissions to celebrate life's finer things: births and birthdays, engagements, weddings, mothers and fathers and couples and families, furry friends, anniversaries, and retirements. All my life I have loved making things for people, and I am honored to be part of these very special occasions in people's lives. You can see more of what I am up to on my flickr photostream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jennyleefowler/.

The Hudson Valley Seed Library was spotlighted in Martha Stewart Living Magazine this month, with my nasturtium seed packet blooming on page 38. Great news for a local project. The nasturtiums are sold out for this year, but there are still many other varieties or art packs available.

etsy family

My lovely and talented mom and step-father just opened an Etsy shop featuring handmade pottery, earrings, and artwork. This is one of their collaborations, a northwest native inspired raku totem. They live on the banks of the Willamette River in Oregon.  Many of their images are drawn from places they enjoy camping, swimming, and hiking as well as the cyberfrontier. You can check it out at: cookdesign.etsy.com.

tiny subjects

When we are in the studio together my two-year-old sometimes asks me to cut her portrait. She sits on my little bench with her legs dangling in space, staring straight ahead and turning-- with a still and watchful expression-- every couple of seconds to look at me. When we finish she gingerly holds the slip of cut paper and says, "For I?"

dutch tulips

We've been under the weather this week, but with all the rest I've also been snipping along on a few commissions. This one hasn't been mounted yet. The images are drawn from photographs, previous papercuttings, and old Dutch tiles.

My grandfather built a little windmill on his farm in Sherwood, Oregon. Out in the pasture there was a pond with a wooden bridge that led to an island where the ducks and geese nested. I remember how tickled he was showing it to us for the first time. The ducks were not as thrilled...
